ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 163 countries, one member per Country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.
ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.
Therefore, ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.
Accrediting Certified Bodies Certified
Route 03 is also been audited and certified by ASCB (E). ASCB (E) is an independent accreditation authority established in 1995. It accredits certification bodies and training organizations and also administers an auditor registration scheme.
ASCB (E) does not perform certification. Certification and Accreditation has become a multi-million pound industry. ASCB(E) however feel that Quality Assurance should be an integral part of a delivered product or service and not a further deliverable that a supplier has to pay extra for in order to deliver his wares.
In short, ASCB(E) do not believe that a certificate of quality assurance should be a prerequisite 'Ticket to Trade'. ASCB(E) were incorporated in 1995 in order to provide a balance and choice to industry with regard to certification and accreditation.
A key aspect of the ASCB(E) approach is to ensure that some currently held misconceptions are corrected. These are:
• That ISO 9000 is currently seen as mandatory.
• That accreditation and ISO 9000 is Government controlled.
• That there is no choice available for firms in how they achieve certification.
